MONITORING & MAINTENANCE STRATEGIES

Materials Conservation Co., LLC provides monitoring services for projects that require phased treatments or have long periods of stasis. Materials Conservation makes use of instrumentation, environmental sampling, and still and time-lapse photography to enable the documentation of changes in materials, objects, and buildings. In certain situations, we conduct monitoring alone while other times we design monitoring programs to inform treatment recommendations and to ensure that conditions are stable.

Materials Conservation also designs maintenance strategies to ensure the long-term preservation of architectural elements and objects. To do this, we believe it is critical to have an in-depth understanding of the physical composition of the element or object in both its original and deteriorated form. For that reason, developing a maintenance plan is typically a multi-step process which may involve performing a condition assessment as well as testing and analysis. Information and results are then used to inform an appropriate set of recommendations.

Our experience includes:

  • Annual maintenance of historic gravemarkers, Christ Church Burial Ground, Philadelphia, PA
  • Annual maintenance of historic gravemarkers, St. Peter’s Church, Philadelphia, PA
  • Annual maintenance of outdoor bronze sculpture, Nemours Mansion & Gardens, Wilmington, DE
  • Long-term maintenance of outdoor sculpture, Tuttleman Collection, Merion, PA
